COURSE OFFERINGS

Beginner Watercolor

This experiential painting course is designed to introduce fundamental watercolor skills to the novice painter. The learning progression will put into practice the essential basics while applying techniques to a variety of subjects. Through demonstrations and hands-on learning, we will work to become more grounded in the core skills with the goal of having students learn enough to paint independently.

Intermediate Watercolor

In this studio class, students choose their own subject matter. Emphasis will be on learning from the immediate experience through problem solving, “teachable moments” and “demos-on-demand”. My emphasis is one-on-one teaching. Other students always have the option to observe while I work with another student.

Loosen Up with Watercolor

This workshop provides a variety of watercolor applications that will invite the artist to, “loosen up!” Emphasis will be on experimenting with techniques that allow for a less confined approach of applying paint to paper. Exercises will be offered to study specific techniques then students will apply those skills to a subject of their choosing. [For an example, see “Mystery Mountain” in the Portfolio section.]

Animal Portraits

TThis workshop explores skills and techniques used to render favorite animals in graphite, colored pencil, pen & ink and watercolor or any combination of these mediums. The primary focus is on developing accurate drawing skills, tips on getting the most out of the medium of choice, and rendering facial features, fur & feathers by layering to darker values. [For A Sample of this technique, please see “Nia” in the Portfolio section.]

Painting Faces in Watercolor

This workshop explores skills and techniques used to render the face in watercolor. We will practice drawing skills, how to transfer a drawing to watercolor paper, seeing proportion, finding shadow patterns, interpreting the value range, mixing skin tones, glazing to build darks and “losing edges” for a smooth transition between washes. [For a sample of this approach, please see “Mom” in the Portfolio section]

Atmospheric Landscapes

This workshop provides a variety of intermediate techniques that will encourage the student to pull out their larger brushes, mix bigger puddles of paint and capture a mood through flowing wet-in-wet washes. We will work on moody scenes such as dark rainy clouds, heavy mist on a rocky waterfront, bright sunny skies with puffy clouds, calm reflections on smooth water, snow fall in a wintery landscape. [See “Mystery Mountain” in the Portfolio section for examples.]

Combining Collage and Watercolor: Landscapes

Introducing special papers over watercolor adds an exciting potential for achieving unexpected textures, colors and effects. You will learn a variety of collage application techniques and tricks of the trade to ramp up the design of either a finished watercolor painting or a painting that otherwise would be considered only partly completed. Paper is fun to work with and adds a new dimension to any design.

Combining Colored Pencil and Watercolor: Wild Flowers

After bringing a watercolor up to a half way or near completion point, exciting results can happen when the paint brush is substituted for colored pencil. Vibrant and delightful to work with, colored pencil over watercolor adds a wonderful depth to any painting. Flowers are a particularly conducive to the application of this technique. [For an example of colored pencil combined with watercolor, please see “Pumpkins” and “Folk School” in the Portfolio section.]

Interpreting the Face through Collage

Using scissors, X-acto knife, glue and a variety of colorful papers, this class will focus on how to interpret the face and features through the application of various collage techniques. Each small piece of paper is in itself an abstract shape, but when all the pieces come together as a whole, the face emerges as a colorful interpretation that can be surprisingly representational. [For an example of this technique, please see “New Year, New Hope” in the Portfolio section.]
